[NTLK] Warning: Proxim made changes in new Orinoco cards

I have been using an Agere Orinoco Gold card in both my Newton and a
Powerbook G3 at work. Not wanting to continue sharing my card with
the office I had the office manager order a new Silver card under the
Proxim name (it is a small, isolated office that does not use
encryption so the Silver card would be satisfactory).

I popped the Silver card into the G3 and it wasn't recognized, even
though it continues to recognize my Gold card. First I tried the
Orinoco drivers (ver. 7.2), then reinstalled the drivers from
Proxim's web site, then switched to the AirPort drivers. Those also
worked for the Agere Gold card and not for the Proxim Silver.

I did not bother to try the Silver in the Newton.

I did check the Proxim web site. It turns out that they now call the
card that we have had running the "Orinoco Classic Gold", and have
two new cards: Orinoco Gold and Orinoco Silver. I check the spec
sheets and everything appears to be the same (voltages, performance
specs), except where the Classic Gold supports Mac and Linix as well
as Windows, the plain Gold and Silver do not. They also apparently
dropped the Agere Silver card that would correspond to a "Silver
Classic".

(Note: the Gold, Silver and "Classic Gold" cards are all 802.11b
cards. Proxim also has 'b,g' and 'a,b,g' cards. I wanted to stay with
something proven to work and didn't realize that Proxim had revised
the Orinoco names.)

I will check Hoshi's site to see if anything new has come up, but for
others - only the Proxim "Classic Gold" Orinoco should be used.
Better is to find an Agere Orinoco Gold or Silver or a Lucent WaveLAN
Gold.
