Can't make out any markings on the D2

D2 is a diode. It is like a one-way-valve for electrons. They typically
put
them there so that the charger can charge the system and the system can
not
try to charge the charger.

If you put on a charger with reversed polarity it will "reverse bias"
the
diode and it will act like a resistor (or a hot plate in this case).

Any idea what the markings are on D2?

A voltage regulator will do that, not a diode.
