Actually sounds pretty reasonable to me. Basically the newt would be
connected via serial (how did they connect the rangefinder and the radio to
one serial port?) to a tactical data radio. The software would have
formatted the call for fire request in an appropriate military standard
(VMF, probably, though I suppose it could be USMTF) and sent it over the
radio to the Field Artillery unit.

I've heard noises about work with PocketPCs that is probably the modern
equivalent of this project.
