OT: I guess root can be "dangerous" if you don't know what you are
doing, but since the release of OS X I have always used user root and
have no adverse problems with the OS or any services running.

I'm always amused and perplexed by this statement, and I've heard it a
few times.

Root is enabled on my box, I use root when it's needed (never in the
gui) and I do lots of playing in the Unix underpinnings, with Fink and
X11, and most of the unix text files you could generally think of have
been modified... being logged in as root is silly, and worse than
silly, dangerous, as the various daemons in the system can run as root,
when they aren't designed to.

The only time I have permissions problems is when I create them myself
by trying to move stuff around as the Admin that I've done as another
user, or a few 3rd party apps that don't set their own permissions
right (and then it's a simple rm -r in the proper /~user/.Trashes file)
