[NTLK] System soup and backup problems?

I'm having a bit of an issue with my MP2k lately. I have had to restart it
several times because it locks up performing various tasks (filing a note,
downloading email, various things). I've gotton concerned that my system
soup has been overflowing, and since I have pared down drastically the
packages I use daily, I probably have a bunch of prefs files and such
floating around that could use some cleaning up.

So, I connected to my PC at work via serial to NCU to do a backup: it starts
to back up "System Information" (about 5 seconds in) and then disconnects.
Neither unit will take responsibility: the PC says my Newton had a
communication error, the Newt says the PC disconnected. Anyway, any advice
on how I can back this up and restore from a backup without my system soup?
