No, this dialog does not necessarily appear with 3Com cards.
You need to select < AppleTalk connect using Ethertalk > in Prefs.
No matter if the adapter is connected to a Ethernet-Hub or switch, the
activity Led shall switch on (short time) for each attempt to receive/send
via Ethernet and during startup after a reset.
This is a good indication if driver and card work or not.
