[NTLK] Is the dongle essential?

 Hi all,

I've got an MP130 which I can connect to my 'very' old
7200 Mac with a Newton serial cable.

But, I've just ordered an MP 2000 Upraded to 2100 from
GEM Enterprises, and, having browsed this list and
other Newton archives, I'm confused about the
connectors for it.

Is it only possible to connect the 2100 to an older
Mac with the dongle? Or does the dongle just provide
extra capabilities?

Any clarification much appreciated.
