Hi all,

I'm realizing I haven't been very available lately and I hadn't
answered your questions. I know this answer isn't personal, so please
contact me if you have further questions. I put you all in bcc
(except NewtonTalk) to be sure that no spam filtering thing will
block this message. Sorry for this rough behavior.

* ATA Support isn't an abandonned project. Actually, I worked on it
on Saturday.

* ATA Support isn't officially available for download at the moment.
The reason is that it has bugs that corrupt data. However, if you
look at ftp://ftp.kallisys.com or http://www.unna.org, you might find
some files. I think that the beta on UNNA has expired and cannot be
used except if you set the time back before inserting any card.

* Most of the bugs you've experienced have been fixed so far.
However, ATA Support still has critical bugs in it. Until they're
fixed, we can't figure out which card work and which don't (some of
the bugs are at the driver level). Until they're fixed I won't sell
anything. And until they're fixed, I won't release anything.
Actually, I'll release something once I'll be running ATA Support
myself.

* I now have an eMate 300 (merci Robert!). And I have experienced
myself the bug with these machines causing a restart when it wakes
up. It's a problem of power, I'll try to fix it. However, I might
release a build before it is fixed.

* alt.rec.... (since some of you also asked me about that software)
has a known bug when the cursive recognizer is chosen. It's a
conflict in the learning process, I planned to look at it.

* ATA cards used with ATA Support 1.0 won't be readable on Macs or
PCs. Future versions of ATA Support might include support for FAT,
but Newton data will still be unreadable by Macs or PCs.

* ATA Support won't work with Iomega Clik!. It should work with IBM
Microdrive, but since I can't afford one I can't promise anything. It
should work with Toshiba drives, although the same restriction
applies.

* ATA Support is designed in such a way that big drives won't be a
problem if you partition the card properly. The only thing to be
aware of is that large cards are usually slower than small ones.
There is no size limit of cards except those caused by ATA LBA (2^32
sectors) and I think that the limit in size of stores (a card is
partitionned in stores) is 2^27 sectors, i.e. 2^26 KBs.

* ATA Support Rc1w, the latest build without debug code, is much
faster than previous releases because of deep changes in the cache
code. Please don't consider previous release's speed.

* ATA Support will work with Type I, II and III cards provided that
your Newton can deal with these sizes. eMates have a single Type III
slot, other units only have Type II slots (hence accepting Type I and
II cards).

* I'm not Quebecois but French. Désolé d'écrire ce courriel en anglais, Samuel.

* I'm definitely over busy these days. To tell you the truth, I'm
finishing my two Master's theses and I'll have final exams in one
week. So I can't promise anything regarding a release of ATA Support
RC1. Nevertheless, I'm trying to find time to work on it.

* ATA Support prices policy has already been set, although I won't
sell anything yet. It will be 50 Euros for a single Newton and 75
Euros for a single user but multiple Newtons. Update between the two
licenses will be 30 Euros.

* Mrs Rogers, I have nothing against moms with three in Pittsburg, PA. :)

Finally, I would like to thank everybody for your support. Thanks to
everyone who tested the software so far.

Regards,

Paul
