My contrast also goes very dark when i do a hard reset... Contrast must be a
higher level function...

Just as a side note, my first MP2000 years ago is like that. It otherwise
works fine -- and the contrast does work fine (unlike yours)... But if I do
the hard reset (which I did when I first got it long ago), it was almost
completely black -- barely visible (I was able to click on the Yes to do it
though).
