If you are using POP to fetch your email, you *should not* check
"Authentificate" box in SimpleMail prefs. You should provide username and
password of course. When using IMAP, "Authentificate" box should be
checked. I don't know if it's a bug or feature of SimpleMail, it appeared
in version 4.2, I also had troubles with it.
