  Well, no. When Apple cancelled the Newton they were hemorrhaging money.
If the Newton was profitable or even profitable in the near future Apple
would have kept it.

  Say Apple did spin it off. And it was wildly successful. Who would have
made a ton of money? Who do you think would have been the majority
shareholder in the spun-off company? Apple.

  The Newton was dropped because it was:

  1) Too big
  2) Too expensive
  3) Way ahead of it's time
  4) Too expensive
  5) Did not have a specific focus
  6) Too expensive
  7) Has a terrible introduction in Doonesbury
  8) Too expensive
  9) Was released before it was finished
  
And the biggest reason: It was too expensive.
