I asked this question a while ago and I was fortunate to get a couple of
replies pointing me in the right direction, so thank you everyone for your
help.
So here's me success story:
Got my 3Com Megahertz 3CXE589DT X-Jack Ethernet card and installed all the
relevant packages.
Popped it in, it didn't do anything (recognise card) as is expected.
Set up my PC with ethernet card (some random 10/100 base RJ45 job).
Set up my Newton with an ethernet setup.
Set my PC to share internet connection.
Made sure all the addresses matched up, then fired up Nethopper, tried
accessing unna.org - lo and behold, the thing actually worked flawlessly.
For packages:
Got the Newton Data Browser for the PC (John, cheers for the address you
gave me below) - installed the TCP/IP pkg for Dock, and it has worked a
treat.
I had been getting increasingly frustrated about the slow speed I had to
connect to my PC with serial, it would constantly drop pkg installations - I
think my computer is too fast (1.5Ghz Athlon), and I had also been getting
worried about excess wear on the interconnect port. For anyone who is
holding out, I cannot recommend enough spending another $20-$30 for an
ethernet card for your Newt. Remember the joy of installing your first
packages, and not caring about how long it took because you were so swept
away with the novelty of it all? And how you sat there all night trying out
different packages? Well that joy is only $20 away! It truly brings back the
fun of it all.Very good for backups too, and large packages such as Newton
Books.
I have also set up Basilisk II (Mac emulator for Windows) with OS 8.1, with
shared ethernet connections - it's actually very good. Perfect for speedy
backups on a PC.
But I still dug out a 'closet Quadra' - a beautiful condition Quadra 800 -
and have that networked to the PC, and use VNC to control whatever machine I
aren't primarily using at the time. A Hotline server acts as my way to
transfer files for the moment. It's actually quite a neat set up, cause my
PC is a wolf in sheep's clothing - the standard PC box sits lurking under
the table, but on the desk is an elegant new Apple Pro USB keyboard, Apple
1710 17" monitor, AppleDesign Powered Speakers I (with output to woofer),
PowerCD, and Apple Adjustable Keyboard for the Quadra. Quite a unique era in
Apple design history. (Sorry I just had to - I'm sure there are a lot of
others here with fond memories of the grand old days).

Data Browser.

As far as sharing an Internet connection via Ethernet, what exactly did you
want to do?
I think I may be able to give you some pointers on this if I know what your
working with.
EXAMPLES: Dial-up ISP connection shared between two Windows PCs?
Dial-up connection shared between two Macs?
A Mix between the two?
Shared between Windows (or Mac) and a Newton?
Cable modem ISP connection?
Let me know, and I'll try to help you out!
On the 3Com X-Jack PC card:
I have wanted one of these for a long time now. So if you get one, let me
know
how you like it as well!
(Just think.... no more PC card dongle!)
