I think that this has been common in the tech world for some time.
Thank God, I've been away from a tech company for over seven years now.
But when I was with them (in a technical, management, and finally
executive role), I watched the Human Resources person go down the
hallway with cardboard boxes and waited to see what doorway was that of
the newest "ex" company member.

Much of the motivation, at the time, was ostensibly "company trade
secrets". The person would be escorted out, the combination on the
doors would be changed, and they wouldn't be allowed back in. Really,
though, because we were in a service environment, the rationale is that
they would somehow "infect" our client base.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think that this is right. Even if you do
give people two weeks (or more) severance. It just seems that companies
are more interested in profit than product, investors than clients,
and, in my case, the CEO's compensation rather than the main line
workers.

Jeremy, good luck in your job search.
