I'm not sure about anyone else, but most ISP's only provide pop and
smtp access. Among other things, syncing would allow you to read,
delete, and reply (echoing this history on your desktop) to e-mail
offline without have to connect your newt directly to a mail server.

If you use IMAP why would you have to worry about syncing? And if
SimpleMail doesn't support IMAP (not particularly familiar with it)
then it seems like that's where the improvement should be made.
