As already said: what is written on the power adaptor is one thing, what it
delivers in practice is another.
So first you should measure the output voltage of the adaptor.
Second you should carefully try to connect your Newton having an application
running, which shows the charging curent (and voltage) like Avi's Backdrop
battery statistic.
If the current stays below 1.5 Amps or better below 1.2 Amps, it is safe to
use the adaptor. If not, you should disconnect the adaptor as soon as
possible.
