The MBTF for a StrongARM SA-110 running at 233MHz is listed at 200,000
hours (more than 22 years of constant use).
Moving to a 5MHz crystal only moves the Newt up to 220MHz leaves it well
within the design specs of the chip, assuming the design for heat
dissipation remains the same for all speeds.
If memory serves, the backlight is rated at less than that, so the
Newton would probably have a MTBF set at less than that of the component
most likely to fail.
And I suspect there are other components that'll die (from on/off cycles
if nothing else) long before any additional heat from an overclock will fry
the CPU.
