Re: [NTLK] New Linksys Switch

Careful here.

Ethernet is Carrier Sense Multi-Access Collision Detection. EtherTalk is
Carrier Sense Multi-Access Collision Avoidance. What this means is that
Ethernet knows when collisions occur. EtherTalk (AppleTalk on Ethernet)
sends small 3 byte "shut-up-I'm-about-to-speak" packets that prevent other
hosts from talking, so as to avoid collisions.

Keep in mind that switches are intelligent devices (mostly) that look for
the source and destination MAC (Media Access Control - not Macintosh!)
addresses and connect those to the physical ports. If your switch has
trouble recognizing a destination for a packet it should broadcast it
until it sees that MAC on a port - from there on, it will send all packets
that have that Mac as it's destination to that specific port.

Did you previously have your Newt hooked up to a different port on the
switch? Moving from one port to another may cause problems in some of the
dumber switches. Usually you'll have to flush the switch's table (on
those small linksys switches, just power cycle the fucker.) Did your Newt
ever work with that switch?

It is possible for a switch to not route ethertalk, but I've never heard
of this happening in practice.

In the worst case if you still have your old hub, hook your Newt and Mac
to the hub, then hook the uplink upto the switch. It's a hack, but at
least your Mac and Newt should still be able to communicate.
