Minor point: MP3 was not designed as a standalone audio format. MP3 is
MPEG-1 Layer III audio, and is part of the MPEG-1 standard, which is used
for VCDs, among other things. The use of MPEG-1 Layer III audio as a
standalone audio storage format is just a hack.

There is no such animal as "CD Quality MP3". Anything that operates on and
reduces 16-bit Linear PCM is by definition inferior to CD-DA (Digital
Audio). That includes maximum bitrate encodings. If you want to hear it
for yourself, rip a track and encode it at 320kbps. Then recode that file,
and repeat several times. After about 5 or 6 iterations you should hear
obvious degradation and distortion even with low-quality speakers and amp.

Gheeze, this is looking like MD-L :).
