I tried that tact. If I had shipped it myself, I would have accepted that
Apple wasn't responsible for it until it was in Apple's hands and I would
have gone after the shipping company. However, Apple sent me the box to
ship it in, and they paid for Fex-Ex, so my feeling is that Apple is
responsible for it from the moment Fed-Ex picks it up. Anyway, when on the
phone with Apple I said exactly the same thing you just did, and Apple said
that the box arrived in good condition and Fed Ex would only do something if
the box was damaged.
