Individual rechargables can be used. If you use NiCads you can fool the Newt into thinking there's a battery pack in the machine by putting a piece of cardboard under the two middle cells so it depresses the little button.
Also, you can rebuild the battery pack by taking it apart and putting in new NiCads. I believe someone on the list has detailed instructions on his Web site.
