This sounds to me like a loose connection. It may be that the connector in
the SER-001 is not exactly the same thing as is in the dongle, or, as with
my home-made internal serial connector, simply not having the external part
of the connector that provides more friction makes it easy to get a slightly
less secure connection. Have you tried holding the plug in firmly while
trying to use the printer? If it's not that, then I'd guess Laurent is
right, and it's a loose connection internally with the SER-001.
