The raw archives are just large UNIX mail spool files (which roll over
every month). The HTML archives are generated by HyperMail.

I haven't researched it that much yet. If the index building or searching
gets too CPU-intensive, I'll move it to another server. I've never seen a
mail archiver that imports into a database except for MARC:

I might just switch to that.
