IIRC the "Combo" refers to the dongle connections. I believe this model
allows the option of connecting the twisted pair (RJ-45) or coaxial ethernet
connectors. Of course this makes for a bulky dongle, and since most people
are carrying a MP in part to reduce weight/bulk/etc. you might be better off
going with another model. The 3C589-DTP (what I use) is a better choice if
you want 3Com products, but the D-Link 660 also is highly regarded by
participants on this list - as you have already learned. Caution: Ebay bids
typically go beyond current and reasonable retail prices. **SURPRISE!** You
can expect to pay $15 for a good quality used card (with dongle) these days
- the XJack PC cards may be a little more expensive since they are providing
the convenience factor. Good luck! ....and caveat emptor!

but not knowing enough bout all this PCMCIA things,
i wonder wether a

        Ethernet PCMCIA 3Com Etherlink III 3C589D-Combo

would work in a MP21k Newton ?

V. Rehorst lists only a 3C589D (without that "Combo")
on his great side (http://www.chuma.org/newton/ethernet/)

IF it would work i could go on and bet on Ebay..... :-)
