Re: [NTLK] Newton Software - Fixed for me anyways

Hah!

I have a 286 Topline portable set up next to the phone as an emergency fax
machine. Its battery is toast, but the thing has a gorgeous mono screen - big
and bright! - _and_ it has a half-length expansion slot, which neatly houses
a once phenomenal Intel SatisFaxion modem (2400 baud data and 9600 fax, would
you believe it?)

It runs Caldera DR-DOS 7.01 (the multitasking DOS that was too much and too
late) and WordPerfect SixOh for DOS (IMNSHO still the best WP ever).

I did have WebSpyder on it for a short while, but the modem really is too
slow for present-day WWW-work (it was acceptable around '98, though...,
before the Bandwith Kidnappings and the Great Commercials Infestation).

To be completely honest, I did upgrade the portable a bit; it originally (way
back in '89!) came with a 40 MB hard disk and 1 MB of RAM (in the context of
the aera, this was one mean mother of a luggeable!), but when I upgraded one
of my desktops in '95, I discovered the Topline accepted - then - ordinary
32-pin SIMMs, and I boosted its RAM all the way up to 5 MB! (an Intel 286
would have choked, but this was a superior AMD 16 MHz and it could take it).
Later I threw out the 40 MB disk and slapped in a 100 MB whopper; somehow the
BIOS found a way to accept it, althought to this day I still have no idea how
it did it: the partition table in the BIOS displays plain nonsense.

Ain't it fun to be a luddite?
