I hope you are successful in registering NewtFTP, but
unfortunately I fear you may find this rather difficult.

I purchased and registered NewtFTP some few years ago when
Tactile was still up and running. Then, some time later, I
needed a new registration code, because I had purged my system
soup during a backup/restore operation. NewtFTP's seed for the
registration code is based on a value stored in the system soup
at the first time the package is installed. The seed is
calculated based on the time that the package is "first"
installed on the system. It's a very tricky method for
preventing users from employing the usual methods of sharing reg
codes, de/re-installing, or deleting prefs slots to get the
program for free. Unfortunately, it also requires that the
developer remain available indefinitely to issue new
registration codes to authenticated, registered users whose
programs have become de-registered through system maintenance
activities.

I never was able to get in touch with Tactile after months of
e-mails and phone messages left for them. Finally, someone who
had been down the same path as I told me how to recover the
initial seed value which I could then re-enter, using a soup
editor, which in turn would allow me to use my registration code
to register the packge. This was ONLY possible because I had an
old, saved backup which contained the system soup with the
initial NewtFTP seed value. I have now written this value down
and stored it in a safe place, along with the (rather complex)
instructions for re-entering it in the system soup if I ever
have this problem again.

If I didn't have that backup, and the helpful advice of a
co-sufferer, I would have been lost.

NewtFTP is a valuable resource for Newties, as you have
discovered, and it's a shame to have it be essentially lost to
new users. I hope a solution is found someday--either Tactile
emerging from the ashes, or a Tibet/Vea/Lookout-style hack
package that can permanently register it.

Good luck,

-Jeremy
