It almost sounds as if something isn't working correctly. Try pussing the
button to unlock and eject the card. Wait a second or two, and then lock the
card again, wait a few seconds (10 or so) and see if you get the message "It
is safe to remove the card". I wonder if the warning message isn't showing
up because some package is freezing the system.
