user name and password is usually done via a challenge and response known
as "Basic Authentication". password is hidden in plain text via a very
simple encoding.

SSL (secure socket layer) used for more rigorous transactions,
such as providing your credit card or personal info.
(this uses encryption; if more than 56-bits, then at least in US, browser
provider has to guarantee that they're not exporting such a "munition" to
places like Iraq; the URL would have https: instead of http: ; the browser
would display a little lock in corner)
