You're right, ethernet only works with system 2.1 (2x00 and eMate)
Sounds like USB->serial will be a good option, both Keyspan and Belkin have
been reported on this list as working fine with Newtons.
Modem to modem should work too, didn't try this myself yet so guess we'll
have to wait for someone else to chime in ;-)
