NTLK Internet, USR Sportster, and MP2100

I was given a USR Sportster 28.8 pcmcia modem and have been attempting to
use it with my newton. I have re-installed all the internet software from
my MP2100 CD, including nethopper and enroute. Now when I attempt to dial
up my ISP I have the following problems:
1: I get now sound. Should I expect to hear the modem sounds through the
speaker on my MP? I have the preferences set to max volume.
2. It appears to dial and then a message "Initializing PPP services."
3. That's it. Nothing else happens.
Any suggestions?
