NTLK Newton and CDMA Data

I month or so ago I posted that I was struggling to get my MP2100 to connect
to my ISP using my Qualcomm QCP-860 CDMA digital wireless phone. Well, today
I got it to work, and with two drivers available on NewtonMAD,
"GSM-Erickson" and "PCS 1900 / Nokia 2190"!

You see, I decided to try again when I read that the Newton to PC data cable
is different from a Apple Geoport DIN8 to PS2 cable on this list. I had been
using one of these since I misplaced my Newton-specific cable. I found my
old Newton PC cable the other day and gave it another go.

It's true. The two cables are different though they appear to be alike, and
this time I was able to use my QCP-860 as a pseudo modem (actually a serial
connection to Bell Atlantic Mobile's modems). All I did was connect the
above cable to my MP2100's interconnect using the dongle and to the null
modem connector supplied by Qualcomm and the null modem connector to the
QCP-860 data cable that comes with Qualcomm's $80 data connectivity kit. On
the Newt under modem prefs I selected Connect using: Serial Port and one of
the above Modem setups. I used the Internet Setup for my standard landline
ISP (Prodigy.net). The Newt dialed out and connected to the net!

The connection is at 14.4 which is fast by wireless standards (I was even
able to download Mapquest's web page with graphics using Newt's Cape)!
E-mail? No problem. All with my regular landline ISP. The phone nicely kept
track of how long I was connected (important since my online time goes
against my regular wireless plan). And I was on for 20 minutes with
negligible Newton battery drain. Very cool!

Give it a try!
