Bootstrapping was defined for me the first time in a multivariate statistics
course. The term derived from the layman's statement "pulling/lifting
oneself up by the bootstraps", which (stated earlier) is physically
impossible. However, in mathematics, the term refers to a method used to
construct a statistical model from a small set of numbers or data, which if
used alone would not prove adequate.
